Vacancy for temporary Gallery Assistant at Belfast Exposed

We are seeking to appoint a vibrant and self motivated individual to join our gallery team for the period of 8 months, commencing in January 2017. This is an exciting opportunity for someone to work within a highly regarded arts organisation.

Belfast Exposed Photography is Northern Ireland’s principal gallery of contemporary photography, commissioning, publishing and showing work by local and international photographers. We undertake community engagement and photography projects across Northern Ireland in line with our socially engaged ethos of addressing exclusion, increasing access and creating opportunities for learning and training. Belfast Exposed also provides bespoke courses for individuals, schools and businesses.

Gallery Assistant Job Description

Job Title:Gallery Assistant
Employer:Belfast Exposed Photography
Place of work:23 Donegall Street, Belfast, BT1 2FF
Reports to:Gallery Manager & Director  
Duration: 8 months commencing end of January 2017
Salary:£14,100 per annum (pro rata)
Hours of work:37.5 hours per week, Tuesday to Saturday. Flexible working, including evenings will be required.

Role Description 

Working closely with the Gallery Manager and Director, the Belfast Exposed Gallery Assistant will provide administrative, operational, and logistical support in the implementation of the Belfast Exposed Exhibitions and Public Participation programmes.

Primary Tasks Involve

  • Assisting the Gallery Manager in realising Belfast Exposed’s exhibition programmes across two galleries and including off-site exhibitions and projects
  • Assisting the Gallery Manager in realising Belfast Exposed’s gallery public participation and education programmes
  • Managing and developing the Gallery Volunteer programme
  • Assisting with marketing and press activities
  • Supporting the smooth day-to-day running of the organisation

MAIN DUTIES

Exhibitions Support:

  • Oversee the installation of exhibition installations; managing installation teams and volunteers during this process
  • Assist with exhibition research
  • Open and close the galleries and ensure they are tidy and presentable
  • Respond to visitor enquiries
  • Monitor the galleries and condition of the work
  • Undertake general housekeeping duties
  • Manage the Belfast Exposed Bookshop including handling sales / online orders and managing orders and accounts
  • Manage and oversee exhibition openings and gallery events including managing volunteers
  • Liaise with artists, facilitators and speakers
  • Document exhibitions and events
  • Assist with marketing and press activities including responding to press enquiries and uploading information to online platforms
  • Undertaking administrative duties as required by the Gallery Manager

Gallery Public Participation & Education Programmes Support:

  • Manage and oversee gallery events
  • Provide technical and logistical support in the realisation of gallery events
  • Liaise with artists, facilitators and speakers
  • Document gallery events
  • To provide guided tours of Belfast Exposed and it’s galleries for individuals and groups of all ages, abilities and backgrounds
  • To assist the Gallery Manager in developing and implementing the gallery Education programme

Volunteers:

  • Manage and develop the Belfast Exposed Gallery Volunteer programme
  • Maintain communication with volunteers
  • Manage recruitment and training procedures
  • Prepare, circulate and manage volunteer rotas

 Press & Marketing:

  • Sourcing, filing and storing digital and physical press materials
  • Updating the Belfast Exposed Website and social media pages (Facebook, Twitter & Instagram)
  • Submitting material to a range of online platforms to promote Belfast Exposed Exhibition, Public Participation and Education Programmes
  • Writing copy and creating / sourcing images for promotional purposes in print and online
  • Liaising with artists to acquire written and visual material for promotional purposes in print and online

 ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

  • Experience working in a visual arts organisation
  • Experience undertaking administration duties in an office based environment
  • Experience working in a front of house role
  • Experience working in a fast paced, public facing environment
  • Experience installing exhibitions and handling artworks of high value
  • Experience planning, managing and overseeing public events
  • The ability to work under pressure and to work towards long-term and short-term deadlines
  • The ability to work as part of a team
  • The ability to work independently and with initiative
  • The ability to manage a challenging workload and diverse range of tasks
  • Experience and ability to work flexibly and to prioritise tasks
  • Experience uploading material to websites and social media platforms in a professional capacity
  • Ability to solve problems calmly and efficiently
  • Experience supervising other staff and or volunteers 

DESIRABLE CRITERIA

  • An interest and in depth knowledge of the work of Belfast Exposed
  • A BA degree in Photography, Visual Arts, History of Art or similar subject area
  • A working knowledge and demonstrable interest in contemporary photography
  • Experience working with editing software including Photoshop and Lightroom
  • An interest and in depth knowledge of the work of Belfast Exposed
  • Experience public speaking in a professional capacity
  • Experience working with a team of volunteers
  • Experience facilitating workshops aimed at peoples of various ages, abilities and backgrounds
