Job title: GALLERY INTERN
Reports to: Gallery Manager
Hours of work: Full-time, 35 hours per week, Tuesday to Saturday, 9.30 – 5.30pm. (Flexible working hours- including evenings and Sundays -may be required).
Start date:13 October 2011
To support the Senior Curator and Gallery Manager in realising Belfast Exposed’s exhibition programme. The role involves mediating between Belfast Exposed and the general public, and between staff internally; communicating and actively engaging people in Belfast Exposed’s work.
To ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the gallery;
To invigilate gallery exhibitions;
To manage the gallery bookshop;
To provide technical support for exhibition installations;
To attend and support staff at exhibition openings;
To help develop the gallery mailing lists;
To support volunteer involvement in the programme;
To provide information on all aspects of Belfast Exposed’s activities to the public and support active collaboration between public and staff;
To develop an aspect of the gallery’s programme.
To open and close the gallery, turn exhibition on and off, ensure gallery is clean, tidy and presentable, ensure that exhibition information is available for visitors;
To be based in the gallery space, welcome visitors, offer information on the current exhibition, monitor the condition of work on display;
To develop a tour of each exhibition, based on discussion with the artist, Senior Curator and Gallery Manager, which will be presented to the public once a week, at a set time, during the run of each exhibition;
To assist the Gallery Manager with the management and expansion of the bookshop;
To provide support to the Gallery Manager and Senior Curator during installations and take down. This will require flexibility and possible late nights and a wide range of tasks eg. painting, condition reporting, wrapping work etc;
To work at exhibition openings, enabling the smooth running of each opening.
To check that gallery contact lists are up-to-date and to develop new contact lists as requested;
To support volunteers, assisting with organization of volunteer induction and enriching and extending the volunteer programme.
To be an active and engaged ambassador for Belfast Exposed in the gallery, to provide key information to the public on all aspects of Belfast Exposed’s activities;
To develop a project during the internship, for example, develop a touring exhibitions programme (for shows that Belfast Exposed has in storage), distribution of Belfast Exposed publications, expansion and accessibility of documentation of events (talks, exhibitions, curator discussion), develop the bookshop project etc.
Experience of working in a gallery or organizing art exhibition projects;
Technical experience, in a gallery, art college or museum setting, with exhibition installation and artwork handling skills;
Excellent organisational skills;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
Comfortable in a public relations role, giving gallery tours etc.
Strong administrative skills;
Able to work unsociable hours when the job demands.
