'A Pleasingly Blank Canvas?'

3 July, 2010

Dr. Stephen Baker, Dr. Robert Porter and PhD researcher Phil Ramsay, from the University of Ulster, will join the artists for a gallery discussion.

The panel will look at the exhibition in the context of a new research project they're initiating, examining the redevelopment of Belfast in the years since the Good Friday Agreement.

After 1998, private development and real estate speculation proliferated wildly in Belfast. The British government and, in time, the Executive at Stormont were united in believing that deregulated markets could solve the social problems that were the legacy of the years of disinvestment and direct rule. Over a decade later, after the largest economic crash in living memory, the city is more fragmented than it ever was, and at its centre, new ghost developments tower over the blighted neighbourhoods: monuments to the failure of a political and economic programme.

Our panel asks how we might read Belfast today, and how we might live in it in the future.

Date: Saturday 3rd July
